Metallica: Masters of Metal

Introduction: The Birth of a Legend

Metallica was born in the early 1980s with a vision to redefine the face of heavy metal music. Since first forming in August 1981 in Los Angeles, California as a result of guitarist/singer (later lead guitarist) James Hetfield posting an advertisement in a local paper asking for drummers to jam, Ulrich, who’s Danish, and Hetfield, whom our research suggests has a degree of Norwegian ancestry, have never looked back.

The Early Days: Building the Metal Empire

It began with Kill ’Am All, their famed first full-length album, released in 1983, that crucially taught us not to expect anything of Metallica save relentless tempos, instrumentals, badassery the likes of which few had ever seen. ‘Hit the Lights’, ‘Seek ’ ’ Destroy’ and the others were less tunes to get a boogie on than statements of intent: from this day forward, metal was going to be very different.

Rising to Fame: The Albums That Defined Metal

Like all metal bands worth their salt, Metallica enjoyed a cult by the mid-1980s. But it was with Master of Puppets (1986) that they claimed an anointed spot in the metal pantheon, cementing their status as a groundbreaking and peerless exemplar of complex heavy-metal mini-symphonies and epic conceptualism. The album is almost universally seen as one of the best heavy metal records ever.

Challenges and Evolution: The Black Album and Beyond

The 1990s only put more pressure on Metallica when their Black Album was released in 1991. ‘Enter Sandman’ and ‘Nothing Else Matters’ were more slick, more poppy, with less of Hetfield’s throat-shredding barks, and – to the disappointment of ‘Pudge Master’ listeners, appeared to be drifting away from metal’s maniacal origins into clean-cut, stadium-ready pop. The Black Album ushered Metallica into the global consciousness, effectively creating a second fan base that kept them and their soon-to-burst wallet higher than ever.

Innovation and Diversification: Experimenting with New Sounds

Not that Metallica has avoided experimentation throughout their career, from Load and Reload to that Lou Reed collaboration Lulu (for the record, I’m a big fan of the former, have yet to hear the latter, and will continue to definitely skip the tail end of Before I Wake for the rest of my days). While the results were not uniformly popular, there was little danger that Metallica would ever stop striving to experiment and change.

Live Performances: Fueling the Metallica Machine

Everything has been said about Metallica’s live shows; we have all heard tales of their energy and accuracy. Their shows are a craziness of lasers and hair, with an intense love of the fans who mosh through the night. Their show in Moscow attended by more than 1.5 million people in 1991 is still considered one of the best live concerts ever.

Challenges: Overcoming Adversity

And there have been plenty of setbacks – the death in 1986 of their original bassist, Cliff Burton, being among the most cataclysmic, followed by the well-publicized group strife seen in the documentary Some Kind of Monster (2004). Perhaps paradoxically, the very tribulations through which the core quintet have passed have gone far to anchor their music in a powerful rhetoric of struggle.

Legacy and Influence: Shaping Future Generations

Even beyond their own discography, Metallica have been an inspiration to innumerable bands and artists through music and style, as well as being philanthropists through the All Within My Hands Foundation.

Conclusion: The Unstoppable Force of Metallica

Metallica is still going strong today. They’ve sold more than 125 million albums worldwide. And the group shows no signs of slowing down: they still tour, they still put out new albums, and they remain princes of metal – never mind kings – for a new generation of musicians and fans.
